What is Ocean Freight?

Ocean freight, also known as sea freight is Ocean freight transportation of goods, products, and commodities by using ships.

It is a major mode of transportation for international trade and commerce, especially for bulky or heavy goods.

Sea freight is the most common being used by international trade of shipping goods, representing about 80% of global trade.

Types of Ocean Freight

Here are the primary types of ocean freight:

1. Full Container Load (FCL)

The type of FCL is a single container that will carry out with a full container. This type of sea freight is ideal for large volumes of goods or items that require exclusive use of a container.

Common container sizes include 20-foot (20ft.), 40-foot (40ft.) and 40-foot High Cube (40ft. HC) containers.

2. Less than Container Load (LCL)

This type will consolidate multiple shippers’ cargo into a single container

Shippers with smaller volumes of goods can share container space, reducing costs compared to FCL.

LCL is proper for shipments that don’t require a full container but still need sea freight services.

3.  Bulk Cargo Shipping

This type  involves transporting unpackaged goods properly such as related to shipping natural resources without using containers.

Bulk carriers are specialist vessels for handling bulk cargo efficiently.

4. Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo)

RoRo shipping is used for transporting solid goods such as, trucks, trailers, spare parts, and heavy machinery.

Vehicles are driven onto the RoRo vessel at the origin port and driven off at the destination port.

5. Refrigerated Shipping

Reefer shipping is used for transporting perishable goods or the goods need a freezer to maintain room temperature.

The goods needed such as fruits, vegetables, meat, seafood, and pharmaceuticals require controlled temperature environments.

Refrigerated containers (reefers) maintain specific temperature and humidity levels during transit.

6. Tanker Shipping

Tanker shipping is specialized for transporting liquid cargo, including crude oil, petroleum products, chemicals, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and other liquid commodities.
